The smoothly muscular, golden silhouette of an Oscar statuette wasn’t just based on anyone. It was actually modeled in 1929 after the nude body of a Mexican director.

Filmmaker, screenwriter, and actor Emilio Fernandez, nicknamed “El Indio,” fled Mexico for Los Angeles in the 1920s, exiled after supporting a failed revolutionary uprising led by Adolfo de la Huerta. READ MORE

Chinese ‘netizens’ inundate Obama’s Google+ page – 23 February 2012

President Obama’s page on Google’s social network site has been inundated with messages in Chinese after restrictions in China were removed.

Every current topic on Mr Obama’s Google+ page attracted hundreds of Chinese comments.

Some contributors made jokes; others said they were occupying the site in the style of western Occupy campaigns.

.xxx pornography web domain names go on general sale – 23 February 2012

Web addresses ending in .xxx have gone on general sale, as legal efforts continue to scupper the domain name.

Some 100,000 addresses have already been purchased in a restricted sale. The first pages went live in September.

Two of the net’s biggest pornography firms have accused ICM Registry – which oversees the addresses – of being “anti-competitive” and a “monopoly”.

Porn sites sue internet regulator over .xxx web address – 23 February 2012

Two of the internet’s biggest pornography firms are suing the net’s address regulator, Icann, over its introduction of the .xxx suffix.

Manwin Licensing and Digital Playground have also filed a lawsuit against ICM Registry, which is running the new top-level domain name (TLD).

The firms claimed that the decision to create .xxx had been flawed and that ICM had abused its position.

ICM said that the claims were baseless. Icann said it was reviewing the case.
